Trees of PeaceVarious English (and later on hopefully American) towns and cities, together with their German and French twin towns, to plant a 'Tree of Peace' in a significant spot (town square) as a symbol of tolerance and mutual respect: firstly between the various faiths, and secondly to demonstrate the growing readiness of human society to make their peace again with Nature.
The action
The mayor of each town and the heads or at least representatives of each faith, as well as those of ecological groups, participate in the planting ceremony which ideally would be followed, or be part of, a major local festivity.
I imagine myself or someone of the Tree Council as one of the speakers, introducing the reasons why the planting of a tree is so perfect for the next step towards a peaceful multicultural world. Most cultures started a good part of their spiritual life under special trees. The representatives of ANY faith can find good reasons within their own culture and traditions to explain why they are so happy to throw their handful of earth into the planting hole now.
After gathering regional experience for a while this could also happen on a national scale in various countries.
The initiative
To look for 'mighty' allies the likes of Greenpeace, WWF, Robin Wood etc. to start this project off. The bigger the name of an organisation the more the authorities will hopefully be impressed. It would be a good chess move to send parallel letters to the European twin towns because this could get the 'Dept. Twin Town Relations' on our side, Trees of Peace is about multicultural tolerance after all.
Ideas and suggestions?
